Church BeliefsThe Presbyterian Church holds to the essential Christian truths set down in ancient confessions such as the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds. We believe that the Bible is the Word of God which directs us to faith in Jesus as our Saviour, and which is the supreme guide for living the Christian life. St.Andrew's is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, and as such is part of the family of churches which find their identity in the historic Christianity rediscovered through the work of the Reformation in Europe. As a Church our doctrinal standards are set out in the Westminster Confession of Faith, which all ministers and elders are pledged to uphold. The distinctives of the Presbyterian Church are found not only in doctrine but also in how we are organised as a church. We are not independent or sectarian, but express the concept that there is supremely one Church of Jesus Christ of which we are a visible part. To this end we expresses mutual responsibility with other congregations in the body of Christ, through the manner of governing ourselves through presbyteries and assemblies. The word 'presbyterian' speaks of a church led by elders who meet as a 'session' (sitting) to oversee the affairs of a local congregation, which in turn delegates a minister and elder to the 'presbytery' to act together with other congregations in a given locality. In turn we also send delegates to a state assembly which represents the congregations throughout a State. |
